Hotsumisskiji temple, number 24, Shikoku
At the tip of Cape Muroto
Hotsumisakiji is the first Shingon Buddhist temple in Kochi Prefecture on the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage, situated on a dramatic cliff at the tip of Cape Muroto.
From a parking area partway up the hill, there was a healthy walk up to the temple. On arrival, I met Masahiro, a chirpy pilgrim from Kumamoto, Kyushu. We had a nice chat and took some photos.
The temple’s beautifully preserved buildings are nestled into lush vegetation. This was one of the most beautiful temples that we visited.
It was founded by Kobo Daishi in 807, and represents the start of the “austerity and discipline” stage and is famous for its panoramic Pacific Ocean views.
The temple is known as the “eastern temple” or “Cape Temple,” it’s where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) reportedly attained enlightenment at age 19.
